TeleSTAR

Stands for Telepresence for Surgical Assistance and Training using Augmented Reality, Augmented Reality (AR) offers advanced educational approaches to train and assess skills of professionals, whether they are students or surgery residents. AR techniques may also be employed to shorten the learning curves related to surgical procedures and increase the overall educational efficiency, thereby providing increased patient safety. TeleSTAR uses a fully digital surgical microscope plus augmented/mixed reality to provide a complete novel teaching experience and the chance to interact directly with the consultant. The project is supported by EIT Health which is part of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology, a body of the European Union.

Course Charité University Medical Center Berlin

This course is for ENT surgeons and will be using a remote augmented reality system for temporal bone preparations. It includes several hands-on sections as well as the transmission of a live surgery between two remote locations in Berlin and Delft. This course consists of two days.

On day 1 we will focus on technical demonstrations and theory. Then we will transfer lessons learned in theory to practice with hands-on training.

On day 2 you will have the chance to follow the surgery performed by an expert - with annotations and the chance to interact with him. Postoperatively we will discuss the case and finally have an exam.

Course INM LMU Munich

During this course participants will follow a live cochlear implant surgery in audiovisual 3D presentation, with the chance to directly interact with the surgical team. The surgery will be performed by Florian C. Uecker from the ENT clinic of the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

3D quality control and enhanced 3D vision techniques will be demonstrated as well as annotations using AR to highlight risk structures/anatomical landmarks and multi-spectral imaging.

Afterwards we will discuss the case, the use of AR/3D techniques and the opportunities that come with this.

Online Course

Because of the increasing numbers of Covid-19 and the necessary restrictions to fight the pandemia, we will give everyone, who cannot be present at one of our main sides, a chance to follow the course online.

However the online course will only offer a transmission in 2D with limited image quality. In addition, participants of the online course are not awarded with CME points in every region.
